Volunteer: Sponsor a family this Christmas

Is your family looking to make a significant difference in another family’s life? You can help make this Christmas season festive by sponsoring one family.

“Our Sponsor a Family Program started six years ago for the Family Friend Program; spread to other programs at Kelowna Community Resources and then grew to include other agencies working with families,” says Deanna Notte, community services manager at KCR. “It is a way to spread the wealth and share the joy.”

Families are screened and working with community agencies to improve their family quality of life. Family profiles are provided and include a variety of demographics such as single parents or two-parent families with young children and or teens. Family sizes also vary.

You can select a full or partial sponsorship. Sponsorship means that you will be buying gift cards for groceries and personalized gifts for family members. Wish lists are prepared for each family.

Gift cards and presents are dropped off at Kelowna Community Resources located at 120-1735 Dolphin Ave. to ensure confidentiality for families.

KCR arranges for gift wrapping and delivery of parcels in time for Christmas.

“Last year, one very thankful family sent us photos of their children opening their gifts,” recalls Notte. “The smiles and surprised looks on their faces are priceless. The family was so appreciative that they even baked us a cake.”

One mom expressed herself saying: “Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you for being our friends and thinking about us. Thank you for caring.”

All year long, you can volunteer as a Family Friend and provide practical and emotional support to a single parent who is feeling alone due to the stresses of parenting young children.
