Kelowna hospital to test roof-top helicopter landing
The second helicopter test flight and landing on the new Kelowna General Hospital Centennial Building is scheduled for Thursday, May 3, at approximately 10:30 am.
The ability to provide air ambulance helicopter service directly to the KGH campus will save critical time in the treatment of seriously ill and injured patients from around the Southern Interior. It will result in lives saved and improved health outcomes.
Here is what to expect on May 3 when the second test flight takes place:
• The helicopter is expected to land at approximately 10:30 am.
• It will fly due West across the lake. It will likely circle the hospital campus as it did last time.
• It will then approach via the Northwest corner of the Centennial Building (across Abbott Street and up Royal Avenue). This is the primary route that will be used for real patient transport.
• The helicopter will depart shortly thereafter. It may take off to the Northeast. This is the secondary route, and will be used for patient transport only when weather conditions don’t permit the use of the primary route.
When actual patients are being transported, helicopters will fly directly to the heliport without circling the hospital.
The test flight is being conducted to allow us to monitor impacts to the KGH campus and surrounding neighbourhood from the landing and takeoff of the helicopter.
