MADD supports local high school dry grads

In just a few weeks, the graduating classes of Central Okanagan high schools will celebrate the completion of a long journey through school.

It’s an exciting time for many grads who are about to embark on a new life in adulthood and take on the world.

But before they do, there’s one last high school party, and parents want to ensure their children celebrate it in safety by offering students the opportunity to attend a dry grad party.

Students and parents work hard to raise funds throughout the year to cover the huge costs associated with organizing a successful dry grad.  Dry grads provide a safe drug- and alcohol-free environment to celebrate their graduation and piece of mind for parents knowing their child(ren) are there.

MADD Central Okanagan Chapter, in partnership with two local high schools, is organizing dry grad car washes on May 3 and 4.   We thank KIA for generously donating $200 towards purchasing car washing supplies.

“We support dry grad events as they provide a safe place for kids to celebrate, have a great time and create lasting memories,” said MADD Central Okanagan Chapter president Carol Fazekas.  “MADD is thrilled to be able to organize these great fundraisers and to partner with schools, parents and high school students in our community”.

According to statistics provided by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, 16- to 25-year-olds account for the highest number of impaired drivers in crashes (33 per cent), while almost half of all crashes (46 per cent) take place between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

We invite and encourage everyone to come out and support this dry grad fundraiser. Come out and have your vehicle washed, stop by the MADD display table and check out one of KIA’s new vehicles which will be on display.
