A million dollars to change breast cancer outcomes
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - BC/Yukon Region (CBCF) has awarded over $1 million in research grants for 2014.
This includes six Medical Research Grants, two Annual Doctoral and Postgraduate Fellowships, four Studentships, two Community Grants, four Small Initiative Grants, and 25 Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team Grants in an effort to achieve a future without breast cancer.
This strong level of funding that covers a wide range of grants wouldn't be possible without the support of dedicated B.C. residents. Valued donors, volunteers and friends give their time, talent and treasure each year; from making a donation to life saving research, or lacing up for the CIBC Run for the Cure, the commitment of Foundation supporters across the province plays an integral role in the work CBCF does.
"The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation continues to push the envelope, making investments in vital research and awareness programs its top priority," said Wendy Slavin, CEO. "The other individuals who should be recognized for this accomplishment are our supporters. We are sincerely grateful for their generosity, trust and shared commitment to creating a future without breast cancer."
The Foundation began awarding grants in 1993 and has since been at the forefront of funding research and community-based initiatives in BC and across Canada. CBCF annually funds those whose projects are expected to contribute significantly to diagnosing, treating and understanding breast cancer.
CBCF also supports comprehensive educational programs targeting women of all ages, and programs which seek to overcome challenges associated with the multicultural population and geographical obstacles in our province.
This past year, the Foundation was proud to support a variety of projects, ranging in focus from genome maintenance in cancer cells, to exploring occupational and other risk factors in relation to breast cancer subtype.
