Taking a bite of out animal cruelty

A number of local media personalities were locked up for a good cause last Friday.

Specifically, the group had from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise enough bail money from friends and business colleagues to “get out of the kennel” by raising funds for the Kelowna branch of the SPCA.

Among the participants were Klaudia Celgarz of Global Okanagan, Alex Draper, marketing director for the West Kelowna Warriors, Christy Farrell and Ian MacKinnon with 99.9 SunFM, and Rock House Style’s Cheryll Gillespie and Sam Shakura.

“The inmates were in kennels complete with beds, toys and of course dogs,” said Heather Harrison, regional branch fundraising support in Kelowna for the B.C. SPCA.

The phones were ringing at the Kelowna branch and the public was walking in to make donations as our inmates feverishly worked their phones, helping to raise $20,225.43 for our local abused, abandoned and unwanted animals.

“We are so pleased with the effort by all our ambassadors and so thankful to the community of Kelowna for all the support we received,” said Harrison.

This year’s total is well above the $13,000 raised last year.

The event was all part of the hype building for the annual Scotiabank and BCSPCA Paws for a Cause Walk to Fight Animal Cruelty set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 7, at City Park.

“This year’s event will include one-kilometre and three-kilometre walks, Kids Zone complete with bounce house, games and prizes, The Dog’s Got Talent competition for dogs with a special skill, and our special guests The RCMP Canine Unit,” said Harrison.
