Stella’s Cuddle for Canuck Place

A family is raising money to bring Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Canada’s third Flexmort Cuddle Cot and the first CoverCool Mini to North America in memory of their infant daughter Stella Marie.

Stella passed away at Canuck Place on April 23, 2012. She was a healthy baby but had a traumatic delivery. Both mom and baby were medivac’d from Kelowna to Vancouver. It was there that they learned of her poor prognosis and where her parents, Greg and Karen, had

to make the decision to provide end-of-life care.

That is when they were introduced to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

The family was living in Winfield at the time so Canuck Place became their “home” away from home. Canuck Place allowed them to be a

“family” without the noise and lights of a hospital and Stella was able to feel and experience the love of her entire family.

Canuck Place took care of meals, lodging, professional photographer, creating mementos and most importantly keeping Stella

comfortable. In Karen’s words: “They made the most horrific event of our lives very peaceful and beautiful. Our daughter passed away in my arms at 17 days old, we miss her dearly but are so extremely thankful that we were able to say our goodbyes at Canuck Place.”

The funds raised will go towards purchasing the Flexmort systems, which keep the child “cool” once he/she passes away. This gives the families more precious time to say goodbye and not be rushed due to the child’s body deteriorating.

The fundraiser, Stella’s Cuddle, is at Canem Auto Gallery on April 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are at Canem Auto Gallery, 884 McCurdy Place, for $20 each. Tickets include a complimentary glass of wine from Cedar Creek Estate Winery, appetizers, entertainment from Chris Madsen plus the UFC 172.

There will be silent auction items and raffles with all the proceeds going towards the purchase of the equipment.
