Davis: Brad Pitt's World War Z winning praise

In what could be described as Brad Pitt vs. zombies, World War Z rises above the typical zombie movie.

Based on the popular novel by Max Brooks, Pitt stars as United Nations employee Gerry Lane, who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to destroy humanity itself.

Directed by Marc Forster, it’s one of the few movies with a myriad of production difficulties that has resulted in a successful outcome.

Although a large number of writers on a screenplay could be a sign of trouble, the talent pool it drew from can actually be credited for helping the movie, including J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5), Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom), Damon Lindelof (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods).

Described as more of an action movie than zombie horror, most critics are heaping praise on it as a summer thrill ride.

Although Disney’s Pixar Studios has produced sequels to its hits Toy Story and Cars, Monsters University is its first prequel.  Set 10 years prior to the events in Monsters, Inc., it is the story of how best friends Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan met while going to the school of scaring.

However, prior to becoming friends, the two mismatched monsters could not stand each other when they first met. Returning as Mike and Sulley are Billy Crystal and John Goodman respectively, and joining them are Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Sean Hayes, Dave Foley and Nathan Fillion.

If you are looking for something different than the usual summer blockbuster, there are three different movies to check out.

Based on true events, The Bling Ring is set in the fame-obsessed world of Los Angeles where a group of teenagers tracked celebrity targets like Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Rachel Bilson online then broke into their homes when they were not at home.

The thieves, known in the media as The Bling Ring stole more than $3 million in luxury goods.

Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame stars in this movie from Academy Award-winning writer-director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation).

Richard Linklater reunites with his Before Sunrise and Before Sunset stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for the third movie in the critically acclaimed series called Before Midnight.

The series follows the relationship between Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy) who are now a couple and parents to twin girls and living on the Greek Peloponnese peninsula.

Critics have heaped love the movie, saying Before Midnight continues the intelligent story of love, marriage and long-term commitment.

Finally, Kon-Tiki is a critically acclaimed drama about how, in 1947, Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl set out to sail 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean on a Kon-Tiki raft.

Despite his inability to swim and fear of water, he wanted to prove Polynesia was settled by people from South America prior to Columbus’ trip across the Atlantic.
