Captain America looks to make big bucks
Riding on the wave of the success of Iron Man and building the anticipation of The Avengers movie, Captain America: The First Avenger was released three years ago to moderately favourable reviews and decent box office.
Since then, The Avengers turned out to be one of the biggest movies of all time and the following Iron Man and Thor movies became even bigger successes than their predecessors.
Now Captain America: The Winter Soldier has a chance to surpass the original and, based upon the fact that it has already earned $75 million internationally and early buzz from critics and audiences, it will do so handily.
Chris Evans (The Fantastic Four) returns as the super-powered American soldier. He is not only still trying to find his place in the modern world as well as deal with the aftermath of the events in The Avengers, but when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, he becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk.
Joining forces with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn.
When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.
Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford and Cobie Smulders also star.
If you liked the intensity of last fall’s Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, you will want to check out Enemy. Gyllenhaal re-teams with Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve for a hypnotic and surreal psychological thriller.
Gyllenhall does double duty in two roles—as Adam Bell, a glum, dishevelled history professor who seems disinterested even in his beautiful girlfriend; and his doppelganger, Anthony Claire, a bit-part actor whom Adam spots while watching a movie on the recommendation of a colleague.
The identical men meet and their lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined.
And finally Afflicted is a new horror movie about two best friends who see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction.
Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.
This latest entry in the “found footage” horror genre is getting some good recognition.
