Steen: Costner does his thing in Draft Day

It’s 13 hours before the NFL Draft and for Sonny Weaver Jr. (Kevin Costner), it’s make or break time as he tries to build a strong team for the Cleveland Browns and for Cleveland—a through and through football town hoping for a winning team.

One of the quotes says it all: “The Clevelanders have an idiotic hope at all times—and that’s all we’ve got.”

This film is more than a football film. In fact, except for a few clips, there is no actual football played at all. For football fans, there are a few players such as Arian Foster and Mel Kiper as themselves.

This show will appeal to men and woman as it’s about sacrifice, healing, negotiations, surprises and making tough choices, all wrapped in a suspenseful and often humorous couple of hours. It shows how this one day changes lives forever.

I truly enjoyed this film. Yes, I am a football fan, but I’ve never had an insight into the workings of the draft process, and while we aren’t experts at the end of the show, we do get a glimpse of this life-altering event.

The main stars of the cast are Costner, of course, Jennifer Garner as Ali, Chadwick Boseman, who had the lead role in 42, The Jackie Robinson Story plays Ventae Mack, and Ellen Burstyn as Sonny’s tough and determined mom.

There are a few great clips of some of the greats—Joe Montana, John Elway and Payton Manning. Teams mentioned are the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills (still my favourite team) and more.

I hope this show does well. This past weekend, it pulled in $9.8 million at the box office, coming in number four for the weekend.

I’m a big fan of Costner just because he’s so effortlessly good at the roles he plays and this one was no exception.

I give Draft Day four reels—just go see it.
