Steen: So-so Amazing Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Reports are that this film brought in $92 million in its opening weekend. It didn’t, however, come close to beating the top opener which was Iron Man 3 and its $174 million take a year ago on the same release date.

For those of you who enjoyed the Toby McGuire Spiderman, Andrew Garfield takes a little getting used to.  For me, the jury’s still out but all in all, the rest of the cast works.  Dane DeHaan, Jamie Foxx and Paul Gramatti as the three villains are pretty scary.  Emma Stone is perhaps meant to have no personality in the film and she doesn’t.

Sally Field, as Aunt May Parker is typical Sally—a real actor who can become any role she plays, but I’m sorry, I still see the Flying Nun every time I see her.

So the villains in this show are strong and unlike anything Spider-Man has seen before and if I were to bet, I’d say there will be an Amazing Spider-Man 3 coming to theatres soon.

The special effects are off the charts as are the chase scenes and the make-up for various characters is awesome.

I like it—it was 2 1/2 hours, so it’s not short, but the action scenes, if not the dialogue keeps you in the seats.

I can’t help but wonder, however, why there are so many upcoming films that just look like re-worked stories we’ve seen before. In the near future, there will be another X-men, more from the Planet of the Apes, Ninja Turtles, Captain America and more. Is there nothing new or are we just wanting to experience comic book characters forever.

I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2, four reels. After all, it cost $250 million to produce, so lots of flash!
