Davis: A look at movies coming up in 2017

January has sequels like XXX3: The Return of Xander Cage, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and Underworld: Blood Wars but originals include A Monster Calls, Hidden Figures, Patriots Day, Gold, The Founder and A Dog’s Purpose.

February has sequels like John Wick: Chapter 2, Rings, Fifty Shades Darker and The Lego Batman Movie. Originals include The Great Wall, The Space Between Usand A Cure for Wellness.

In March, Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine in Logan. Other sequels include T2: Trainspotting, Goon: Last of the Enforcers and Kong: Skull Island. Remakes include the live action Beauty and the Beast, Power Rangers, Ghost in the Shell (a remake of an Anime classic), and CHiPs, a comedic remake of the television series.

April sees a Smurfs sequel and the eighth Fast and the Furious movie called The Fate of the Furious.

Of course, May is a big month with Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and the Bay watch remake. As well, there is a new telling of the story of Camelot with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

The highly-anticipated Wonder Woman starts June off, followed by the remake of The Mummy with Tom Cruise, World War Z2, Pixar’s Cars 3, Transformers: The Last Knight and Despicable Me 3.

Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes and the big franchise titles in July but Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk and Luc Besson’s sci-fi actioner Valerian may steal some of their thunder. There is also Steven King’s The Dark Tower and Disney has a yet announced untitled live-action fairytale set for release in July.

August has almost all original movies, save for Annabelle 2 and Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature. Otherwise there is The Emoji Movie (animated, of course), All I See is You with Blake Lively, and her husband Ryan Reynolds in The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

Steven King’s It gets another adaptation in September plus The LEGO Ninjago. Sony Animation (Hotel Transylvania) has a yet-untitled release, a remake of Flatliners and Tom Cruise reunites with director Doug Liman for American Made.

The sequel Blade Runner 2049 is finally being released in October as well as Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Plus we get triple horror with Friday the 13th, Insidious Chapter 4 and Saw: Legacy.

November has Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and DC’s Justice League plus sequels ABad Mom’s Christmas and Creed 2. There is also a Disney animated feature called Coco and a remake of Murder on the Orient Express.

And while there are movies like Jumanji, The Six Billion Dollar Man and Pitch Perfect 3 coming next December, all the attention is again going to Star Wars with Episode VIII.
