Letter.

To the editor:

I would like to take issue with the letter by Andy Thomsen as it is based on some truths but many misconceptions. Yes, some Canadians are scared, not because of any threat by Canadian Muslims but by the spread of misinformation, fear mongering and anti-Muslim propaganda. The very things that the government is trying to limit.

I agree about the sanctity of free speech and people should be free to express their opinions whatever they may be, but it is true that Islamophobia is growing and I applaud the government in trying to combat it and seeking to find productive ways to achieve a tolerant society. This is not muzzling the press or curbing free speech.

Secondly, ISIS may be predominantly Muslim but that does not mean that all Muslims are extremist and violent, that is false logic. Canadian Muslims do not support ISIS and are as appalled by the violence as we are. To call the bill “Christianaphobia” and muzzling of free speech is quite unfounded and ignores the fact that Islamophobia is growing and it is dangerous if we want a tolerant and fair society.
