Volunteer Centre: Volunteer finalists will amaze and encourage you

Do you want to be amazed? Encouraged? Grounded in what others are doing to impact our community?

If you answered yes’ then I have a suggestion for you.

Attend the City of Kelowna’s Civic Awards Gala. It might be the best $25 you have spent in a while.

Did I hear you say, “Ah come on, what an exaggeration.”

My response to you is that each year I attend, I leave the event feeling uplifted and truly awe struck by the wonderful, committed people in our community.

These are people who give of themselves and their resources to make the lives of others better.

There are teens who volunteer countless hours while keeping their school grades high and participating in extracurricular sports or arts and culture.

There are coaches and sporting teams that contribute to the fitness quotient of population.

There are men and women who donate time, skills and experience.

There are businesses, small, medium and large that support programs and services with finances, in-kind products and services, and volunteer time.

Each example puts a face and name to compassion; people caring about people.

I really do challenge you to get a ticket.

Tickets cost $25 per person and they are available through the City’s Glenmore office at 250-469-8811. Tickets, if available, may also be purchased at the door.

The Awards Gala takes place at the Kelowna Community Theatre on Thursday, May 1.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m., for a Social Hour in the main lobby with delicious food, drinks and excellent company. Photos and descriptions about each finalist will be on display. The awards show will start at 6:50 p.m.

You can find out more information about this year’s finalists and the Civic and Community Awards by visiting the City of Kelowna’s website at kelowna.ca/residents.
