FC Edmonton stun Montreal Impact 2-1

By The Canadian Press

EDMONTON - Michael Nonni capitalized on a defensive error to score in the 90th minute and give FC Edmonton a 2-1 win against the Montreal Impact in the first leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal Wednesday.

Nonni jumped on a chance to chase down the ball after Montreal defender Karl Ouimette sent a header back to goalkeeper Evan Bush. Nonni collected the ball and fired it into the top of the net to give FC Edmonton its first win against an MLS team in the competition.

"We were working the whole night," said Nonni. "We played well and got a few lucky bounces. We're very happy with the win."

Tomi Ameobi also scored for the North American Soccer League club, who next play the Impact in Montreal on May 14.

The defending champion Impact, who were without designated player Marco Di Vaio, struck first in the 56th minute. Jack McInerney, who had moments earlier sent a header off Edmonton's crossbar, received a free kick from captain Patrice Bernier and scored unmarked.

The lead was shortlived. Four minute later 17-year-old midfielder Hanson Boakai found an on-rushing Ameobi, who slotted a shot past Bush to tie the game at one.

Earlier, Toronto FC opened their semifinal with a 2-1 victory at home to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
