Fire protection area extended at south end of Lakeshore Road

The board of the Regional District of Central Okanagan voted Feb. 21 to extend the Lakeshore Road fire protection area to encompass the additional waterfront property.
Under the service area, fire protection is provided by the city of Kelowna fire department.
Regional district communications coordinator Bruce Smith said another similar area is near Brent Road, just south of Peachland.
A group of 10 to 15 property owners agreed that they wanted some kind of fire protection.
In the absence of creating their own fire department, they approached the regional district.
Smith noted fire services for the Brent Road area were contracted with the district of Peachland fire department.
Due to the expense of vehicles and training, creating a fire department requires the support of a much larger group of properties.
