Kelowna bylaw officer hit by uninsured vehicle
A Kelowna man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly drove into a bylaw officer in an uninsured vehicle.
Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the bylaw officer was driving on Ethel Street near Raymer Avenue when he spotted a vehicle with expired insurance that was parked on public property, said Const. Steve Holmes.
After the bylaw officer called for a tow truck, the man believed to be the vehicle owner came outside and confronted the bylaw officer before returning to the house.
Moments later, police say, the man came outside, jumped into the truck and started it up.
"The officer stepped in front of the stopped vehicle and advised the owner that he could not drive on the road without insurance," said Const. Steve Holmes.
It is then alleged that the 56-year-old driver put the vehicle in gear and drove into the bylaw officer, "who had to jump part way onto the hood to avoid being run over."
"When the officer pushed back off, the truck drove away," said Holmes.
The truck was later found parked on Aberdeen Street and the driver was located on foot and arrested.
Police say he is facing recommended charges of dangerous driving and assault. He will also be served under the Motor Vehicle Act ticket for no insurance. His vehicle was towed.
