Fire damages Rutland businesses
Kelowna firefighting crews were still on the scene late this morning cleaning up the mess left behind after a fire broke out at 3:11 a.m. in the 900 block of McCurdy Road.
The fire destroyed a number of outbuildings, a forklift, a couple metal storage containers and burned up approximately 1,500 tires. Firefighters' efforts were successful in saving the nearby Ok Builders building, which was threatened by the fire's intense flames.
Business suffering damage included Top Grade Tire Recycling and the Deacoff Bros. Sawmill.
RCMP cordoned off a three-block radius around McCurdy after the fire broke out as firefighters worked to cool a large propane tank on site which was under direct flame impingement.
Afer being closed earlier this morning, McCurdy Road is now re-open to traffic. A total of 30 firefighters battled the blaze.
Fire investigators and Kelowna RCMP were on scene this morning as the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. As well, no estimate on the damage caused by the fire has been released.
