Elderly West Kelowna man dies while helping community

A 74-year-old West Kelowna man died Thursday morning after being struck by a pickup truck on Shannon Lake Road.

"Police were called to the scene at 8:36 a.m. today and determined that a Green GMC pickup, being driven westbound on Shannon Lake Road by a 34 year old male , went off road right on a slight curve and struck the victim on the shoulder of the roadway," said Const. Steve Holmes, adding that the man was on the roadside picking up litter to keep his community clean.

"The critically injured man was taken to Kelowna General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased."

The pickup driver was not injured and police are currently investigating a possible cause for the incident. Worksafe B.C. and the Ministry of Transport have been notified.

The name of the victim is being with held pending the notification of the next of his kin.
