No connection made between two Kelowna bank robberies
Surveillance camera image of suspect in Sept. 14 robbery at the Prospera Credit Union at Cooper and Highway 97 in Kelowna.
On Sept. 15 at 6:10 p.m. a male walked into the TD Canada Trust in the 1600 block of Ellis Street in Kelowna and passed a note to the teller.
It was a demand for cash and an indication that the suspect had a weapon.
The suspect was given an undisclosed amount of cash and he left the bank. No one was injured and no weapon was seen.
Subsequent investigation by Kelowna RCMP, which included a review of the bank's surveillance footage, led to the identity of a suspect who was apprehended just before 11 p.m., at a traffic stop on Hwy 97 near Enterprise way.
The 31-year-old West Kelowna resident was to appear in court Friday to face a recommended charge of robbery. He is known to police for drug and criminal code related offences.
On Friday police could not confirm a link between the TD robbery and a Prospera Credit Union robbery that occurred on Sept. 14.
In that incident a male suspect entered the Credit Union on the corner of Cooper Road and Harvey Avenue at 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 14 and handed the teller a note with a money demand on it.
He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and he left on foot heading west on Harvey Avenue. No one was injured in the incident.
Despite a rapid police response and containment of the area, the suspect eluded police.
Surveillance videos captured images of the suspect who is described as a light colored male in his mid 20s, six feet tall with a thin build. He has short dark hair and very dark brown eyes. He is clean shaven with a thin moustache and was noted as having big lips.
He was wearing a black ball cap with a maple leaf on the front, a dark colored zip up long sleeved fleece jacket, blue jeans and white runners.
Kelowna RCMP have caught two other recent robbery suspects, one of them with the help of
surveillance images and the public's help through the media. Police are hoping that the circulation of these suspect images will help in the apprehension of the suspect involved in this robbery.
