Teen thwarts attacker on popular Kelowna trail

Swift defensive action helped keep a Kelowna teen safe from a potentially serious attack on the Mission Creek Greenway.

At around 1 p.m. Wednesday a 17 year old woman, was walking on the Greenway in the 2300 block of Springfield Road.

"She heard the sound of someone running behind her and believed it to be a jogger on the pathway," said Const. Steve Holmes.

"She looked behind to see a Caucasian male in his late 20s approximately 5'10"-5'11" tall, athletic build weighing around 180 lbs, with short brown hair."

The man ran at the teen, grabbed her and attempted to force her off the path.

"(She) was holding a small can of dog pepper spray in her hand and she instinctively activated it, spraying her attacker," said Holmes.

"The suspect immediately released the victim,  who ran to Orchard Park Mall and called police."

The woman was shaken, but unhurt.

At the time of the attack, the suspect was wearing a black, hooded Adidas jacket with white stripes on the sleeves, gloves, black running tights with a hole in the right leg and white running shoes.

As the victim did not know her attacker, police are warning Greenway users to be careful and to report any suspicious persons or circumstances to police.

It's the first time anything has gone awry on the Greenway in awhile, but last May RCMP were warning women of four "groping" incidents on the popular running path.

If anyone has seen a person matching the suspect's description, please contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or visit www.crimestoppers.net to report.
