Police search on all fours

Kelowna Mounties spent two days scouring a construction site where an abandoned rifle was discovered, but they say it's not cause for concern.

"If you're going to do something, you should do it properly, so we're combing the area to ensure there wasn't anything else that's dangerous or of interest to  us, " said Const. Steve Holmes.

The firearm that sparked around-the-clock police presence at property at the corner of Highland Drive and Clifton Road was found, around noon Tuesday by construction workers clearing brush covered land.

"Once they found it, they called us because one doesn't find a firearm on public property very often," Holmes said.

Moving forward — assuming more weapons aren't found— the investigation into the gun will focus on its history.

" Part of the investigation is to find out how it ended up there and whether it has been used in a crime," said Holmes.

The search was slated to come to an end Wednesday afternoon.
