Garbage collection confusion? There's an app for that.
Can't remember what day to put out the garbage or the recycling for collection? Need a reminder about what goes is accepted for recycling. Well, now there now an app for that — and just about anything else you want to know about waste disposal in the Central Okanagan.
The application in free and currently there are versions for iPhone, iPad, Android and new 2012 Blackberry devices available from the different phone makers app stores. Just search My-Waste. Don't be confused by the My-Waste garbage and recycling (for Surrey B.C.) and My-Waste Denton (for Denton, Texas) both of which come up in a search on the iPhone App Store.
Once in the My-Waste app, users can identify where in the Central Okanagan they live to get area specific details.
“For residents who’ve got an internet-enabled smartphone or tablet, you can now get the Central Okanagan’s garbage, recycling and collection details right at your fingertips, anytime you want them," waste reduction facilitator Rae Stewart said.
"The My-waste app lets you download the full range of info found in the Living Greener Calendar, set up regular reminders for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection. Plus it provides depot locations and hours, and recycling and disposal options for dozens of materials. It’s like having the Living Greener Calendar on your smartphone.”
For those who do not want to search in an app store, the applications are also available through the CORD website at regionaldistrict.com/mywasteapp. Once there, users can either scan the QR code or select the link that will take them to the store or marketplace for your device.
“This is a new way for us to connect residents with local waste disposal and recycling programs.," said Stewart. "We’ll be able to update the information on the My-Waste app as needed during the year, so it will always be current. Residents will never forget a collection day and that should lead to increased recycling. Everybody wins.”
Stewart added information about collection schedules will still be available on the CORD's website and in printed form in the Living Greener Calendar for residents who prefer to use traditional educational materials.
Print copies of the calendar are available at all local government offices in the Central Okanagan.
