Excessive speeders targeted
The police want drivers to know the climb up the Connector route leaving West Kelowna is not an invitation to step on the gas and break the speed limit.
On May 17, the Central Okanagan Traffic Services and the Kelowna Integrated Road Safety Unit conducted a joint enforcement project targeting excessive speeders heading eastbound into Kelowna along Highway 97C near Brenda Mine.
Over a five hour period, police handed out 43 violation tickets for speeders traveling more than 20 kph over the posted speed limit of 110 kph.
The highest speed was 195 kph by a driver who resides outside the Kelowna area. The driver received a $483 ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Police reiterate that although it may appear to the driver that you are "in control" of your vehicle, your reaction time will remain the same at any speed—physics dictates that the faster you're going, the longer it will take you to stop.
