Canada Day parking and transit changes in Kelowna

A number of road and parking restrictions will be in place in downtown Kelowna during this weekend's Canada Day celebrations.

According to the city, starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 1, Water Street from Cawston Avenue to Sunset Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic.

With fireworks expected to take place at 10:30 p.m. (weather permitting), Knox Mountain Drive will be closed to vehicles at 8 p.m.. But pedestrians will have full access to the park until 11 p.m. Knox Mountain Drive will reopen on Monday, July 2 at 9:30 a.m.

Motorists are asked to obey traffic control personnel at all times for the safety of the large number of pedestrians anticipated to turnout to participate in the day-long festivities and to watch the evening fireworks.

On-street parking will be unavailable on Water Street, from Cawston Avenue to the Prospera Place parking lot entrance on Ellis Street, as well as on Bernard Avenue in front of Kerry Park. The Mill Street parking lot will also be closed from 6 a.m. until after the crowds for the fireworks disperse.

The Dolphins parking lot will be closed from noon on Saturday, June 30 to noon on Monday, July 2.

Public parking will still be available at the Library Plaza Parkade, located at 1360 Ellis Street and at the Chapman Parkade at 345 Lawrence Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to take transit to the fireworks. Buses will be running according to the  regular Sunday schedule throughout the day. Additional buses will be available on major routes to alleviate overcrowding. Following the fireworks, buses will be available at the Queensway Transit Station for extended service on major routes including the No.1 Lakeshore bus, No. 2 North End, No. 7 Glenmore, No. 8 University, No. 10 North Rutland, No. 11 Rutland, No. 21 Glenrosa, No. 23 Lake Country and No. 97 Express. Regular fares will apply and children under 12 ride free when accompanied by an adult.

Service disruptions and traffic delays may occur throughout the day due to road closures. All No.  2 North End buses will detour from Water Street to Cawston Avenue to Ellis Street and then follow regular routing.
