Kelowna residents offered free legal advice in City Park
Today, and for the final time as part of the annual Pro Bono Going Public event, 16 Kelowna lawyers will converge in City Park to provide free legal advice to low-income Kelownians.
The lawyers will-- first and foremost-- be providing a valuable public service by advising people on how to resolve their legal problems. But they will also be calling attention to the degree to which addressing B.C.'s current access to justice crisis has fallen on the charitable shoulders of pro bono lawyers, and outlining the need for governments to provide adequate funding for legal aid in addition to pursuing justice reform.
Titled “Pro Bono Going Public 2012” and sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of BC, the event will offer media the opportunity to speak to Access Pro Bono staff, the volunteer lawyers, and their legal advice clients who can speak about the realities of living in a society where critical legal services are unaffordable.
The event is taking place in City Park, in the Rose Garden area, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information is available here: www.advice-a-thon.ca .
