Kelowna four-plex unit catches on fire
Kelowna firefighters were able to contain a fire at a Hein Road four-plex this morning to the front deck of the home.
The fire department responded to a 911 call at 1:03 a.m..
The occupants of the four-plex unit were woken up by the noise and flames of the fire and attempted to put it out themselves by using a fire extinguisher. As a male occupant from the unit opened the front door, he was overcome with smoke and had to exit the unit using the back door.
Meanwhile, a neighbour grabbed a garden hose and was trying to douse the blaze as firefighters arrived.
The firefighters put out the fire and checked for hot spots in the extension to the front of the residence, then cleared the smoke from the four-plex unit using positive pressure ventilation. Once smoke was cleared from inside the occupants were allow back into their home.
Ambulance paramedics treated the male occupant for smoke inhalation and no further medical attention was required.
Three fire engines, one rescue vehicle, one command vehicle, one ambulance and three RCMP patrol cars responded to the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.
