Menorah lighting kicks off Hanukkah in Kelowna
For the second year, a large Menorah has been erected and lit in downtown Kelowna to mark the start of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah.
The large community Menorah is located in Stuart Park across from City Hall and was lit Sunday night with several dignitaries on hand as part of a crowd that numbers a few dozen.
It's lighting marks the start of Hanukkah. The holdiay lasts for eight days and a candle is lit on the Menorah each night.
According to Rabbi Schmuel Hecht, the Menorah reminds people of the power and energy each person possess to transform themselves, their communities and the world to good and better.
In addition to the lighting ceremony, which included Mayor Walter Gray, a blessing was delivered by local Jewish community leader Sam Larry.
