Traffic fine money flowing back to Central Okanagan municipalities
Local governments in the Central Okanagan will receive a total of $363,665 in Strategic Community Investment Fund grants from the provincial government.
The fund distributes money raised from traffic fines in B.C. as well as money in the small community and regional district grant program and gives it to communities to invest in projects they identify as priorities.
Under the funding announced Monday, Kelowna will get $248,301, Lake Country a total of $78,589, the Central Okanagan Regional District $22,625 and West Kelowna $14,150.
“I’m happy to see $78,589 going to Lake Country,” said Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick.
“It will go a long way in helping it make investments in key local projects, as well as crime prevention services.”
His local colleague, MLA Ben Stewart, said it was fitting to see, money raised through police work being reinvested in local crime prevention programs. The traffic fine revenue sharing program directly assists eligible municipalities that pay police enforcement costs.
The grants come from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets. The grant amount is based on the contribution to total municipal policing costs.
