Kelowna celebrates International Talk Like Batman Day
Kelowna placed itself beside the likes of Christian Bale, George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton Thursday as several residents celebrated the inaugural International Talk Like Batman Day.
The concept caught momentum over the last couple weeks after 99.9 Sun FM Morning Show hosts Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu pitched the idea to their listeners.
"We realized there is basically a day for everything," said Lim.
"There's cupcake day, grilled cheese sandwich day…"
"…macaroon day, talk like a pirate day," continued Sidhu.
The pair decided they would attempt to make Kelowna the birthplace of International Talk Like Batman Day.
They started an online petition, which gathered hundreds of signatures within hours, and then made an appointment with Kelowna Mayor Walter Gray.
"He thought it was a great idea so he said he'd write an official proclamation so Kelowna would be the first city in the world to officially recognize April 4 as International Talk Like Batman Day," said Lim.
Sidhu said there were plenty of local participants, but the majority of interest was shown on Twitter.
"We (had) it trending on Twitter…lots of folks were sending in photos of not only talking like Batman, but dressing in their Batman gear as well. It's kind of nice to see the support," said Sidhu.
She added Christian Bale's publicist forwarded an e-mail to the actor, informing him of the day.
Lim and Sidhu said they plan to celebrate April 4 the same way in years to come.
"A lot of our listeners really took pride in having something that started here in Kelowna," said Lim.
"They wanted to make this happen—they had something to cheer for."
After airing Thursday's morning show, Lim said his throat was paying the consequence for sounding like "a grizzly bear that just got punched in the throat."
"I feel like I just swallowed gravel," said Lim.
"Let's just say we've got a lot of Fisherman's Friend in our studio," said Sidhu.
