Shelter Bay Marina opens new gas dock
What at the time seemed to be a large inconvenience has resulted in an improved gas dock for Shelter Bay Marina.
The marina's former gas bar was damaged, along with two boats, in a fire last August.
Over May long weekend, Shelter Bay unveiled its new gas dock, which includes four pumps and a diesel fuelling option.
"It's the first time diesel has ever been offered on Okanagan Lake," said Kathryn Albright, a supervisor who has worked at Shelter Bay's gas dock for six years.
Albright explained owners of diesel-powered vessels previously had to pay for the delivery of diesel.
"We've only had a few diesel customers so far, but the season usually starts off slow. We'll be busy in another two weeks, when the kids get out of school and everybody has more time."
The timing of last August's fire was unfortunate as Shelter Bay fuel sales were at an all-time high.
"Our shack burned down during the busiest time of the season—it was right after August long weekend when we had a record-breaking long weekend with fuel sales.
"After that, (Hotel) Eldorado was was the only place in the Kelowna area for people to go."
Albright added Shelter Bay managed to get a temporary dock opened three weeks later to help satisfy the demand.
"People missed it. They wanted us back up and running as quick as possible."
Shelter Bay has installed additional security cameras for surveillance of its new gas dock, as well as more fire extinguishers and "no smoking" signs.
