Two people hospitalized in Kelowna after downtown assault
A 44-year-old man from Kelowna is in custody after two men were sent to hospital following a fight outside the Metro Church service Sunday afternoon.
At 1 p.m. on Sunday, an altercation occurred outside the French Cultural Centre on Richter Street at Bernard Avenue, which is rented to Metro Church. The church offers open services, primarily attended by street people within the area, and police say the victim and assailant are believed to have been attending the service.
How this peaceful afternoon activity became cause for a violent fight was not known to police providing information on the incident Monday morning but, the first victim was said to have been knocked unconscious near the service.
The first fight prompted the second victim to take off after the assailant as he tried to flee the scene. This second individual then wound up getting stabbed on Ellis Street at Leon Avenue, outside Tonic's Pub, by the same assailant.
Ryan Waters, 44, has been arrested and was in court Monday to face charges of assault, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
A 64-year-old and 29-year-old were sent to hospital; police did not release which one sustained the head injury and which was stabbed.
