Highway 97 reopens after two-vehicle accident south of Vernon
Vernon RCMP have released some details about a motor vehicle accident south of Vernon that closed Highway 97 for a spell Monday morning.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m., officers responded to a two-vehicle accident south of Bailey Road.
"Two single-occupant vehicles collided head-on," said Cpl. Gerry Kovacs with the Vernon RCMP. "The two drivers have been taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries. One driver was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital, the other to Kelowna General."
The severity of the drivers' injuries is not known at this time.
A motorist said the accident involved a PT Cruiser and a Mazda.
Highway 97 was closed in both directions but, as of 10:20 a.m., was open to single lane alternating traffic and "will be slow going for awhile," said Kovacs.
The motorist texted The Morning Star and said northbound traffic was backed up well past Crystal Waters Road and the accident was less than one kilometre north of Crystal Waters Road. Southbound traffic at 10:30 a.m., said the motorist, was backed up to Bailey Road.
The cause of the accident is unknown and an RCMP collision analyst has been called to assist North Okanagan Traffic Services with the ongoing investigation.
