Road trip ends badly for two Kelowna residents

Two Kelowna residents were arrested this week in Canmore, allegedly packing a significant cache of drugs and weapons.

According to Canmore RCMP, at approximately 1:05 a.m. Feb. 13, one of their officers observed a black Honda Civic driving erratically on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of the Town of Canmore.

"Police stopped the vehicle, and found that the driver did not have a valid driver’s licence," said Sgt. Ryan Currie Canmore RCMP, in a press release.

"Upon speaking with the driver and his passenger, the driver admitted to having, and produced a small amount of marijuana. The driver and passenger were arrested without incident."

A subsequent search of the vehicle, allegedly uncovered approximately 20 pounds of marijuana, five grams of cocaine, two long barrelled firearms, one handgun, an extendable baton, ammunition and loaded magazines for firearms, assorted edged weapons, and cash.

Arrested at the scene, and subsequently charged with drug and weapons offences, were Kelowna residents  Stephen McManus, 22, and  Vanessa Flavin, 18. ed.

"Organized crime groups use funds obtained through the sale of marijuana to fund other illegal activities which pose a threat to our continued health and well being," said Currie.

"Marijuana trafficking harms communities. Wherever it exists, there’s the potential for an increase in criminal activity and a greater chance of violence on top of additional economic costs and other health and safety risks."
