Festivals Kelowna eying a buskers festival

Festivals Kelowna is considering creation of a buskers' festival in the city.

The organization's executive director Renata Mills told council Monday research is being conducted this year and the new festival could kick off in either 2015 or 2016.

During her annual report to council about Festival Kelowna's activities in 2013, Mills said her group hopes to follow the successful lead of Victoria, which already hosts a popular buskers festival.

Kelowna currently features buskers at set locations around the downtown area during the summer and plans to expands to Rutland this year. It introduced its "marquee" busker program last summer, where featured buskers perform at high-profile outdoor locations around the city.

In her report, Mills said initial research shows a multi-day festival would be better than a single-day event and plenty of lead time would be required to secure partners, funders, performers, layout an effective site and create a marketing campaign.

A "theme" weekend featuring buskers could be held this year as a teaser event. she said in her report.

The idea of busker festival is keenly supported by Mayor Walter Gray, who first proposed it last year.
