West Kelowna sports shop owner facing child porn charges
Global Okanagan is reporting tonight that a West Kelowna businessman has been arrested on child pornography charges.
Global says the charges relate to an online sting by the RCMP involving Tyler James Nowek, 29, owner of the Ultimate Hockey & Skate store in West Kelowna.
While the RCMP have not released any information to the media about the charges, Global says that in March, an officer with the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, logged onto a chat site pretending to be a 13-year-old girl. After an exchange of alleged sexual communications, police executed a search warrant at Nowek's store.
It's reported Nowek has been charged with child luring and making or publishing child pornography.
The charges appear to have caught many in the local hockey community off-guard, as Nowek is an avid supporter of West Kelowna Minor Hockey and the West Kelowna Warriors junior hockey team.
Adam Less, who handles the marketing for Nowek's business and with the Warriors, said he had just heard about the charges from someone who saw the Global Okanagan TV news report of it.
"I literally just found out about this 10 minutes ago," said Less told the Capital News. "His business is a marketing client of mine but at this point I'm just not sure all of what's happening."
Another person in Nowek's hockey-related social circle told the Capital News that police showing up with a search warrant at Nowek's store was widely known at least in the local hockey community, but what that was all about wasn't commonly known.
Nowek is slated to make his next court appearance June 13.
