Westwood Manufacturing suffered damage in fire
A local business has sustained significant damage from a late night fire.
At around 12:44 a.m. Thursday, Kelowna Fire Department responded to report of a fire in the attic space of Westwood Manufacturing.
"On arrival smoke was observed coming from the building. Alarms and sprinkler system had been activated. First in crew reported smoke in the building but no open flame," said Laurie Serres, platood captain of the Kelowna Fire Department.
"When access was gained into the attic area some embers and flame were seen. The sprinklers in the affected area were operating and prevented the fire from spreading, the water from the sprinklers caused part of the ceiling to collapse dropping gyproc, insulation, and water onto the wood and cabinet product below the collapse."
Serres said there was significant water damage to parts of the 54,000 square foot building.
"The fire cause is currently under investigation and by the time Kelowna Fire Department left the scene a restoration company had arrived to start the cleanup of the manufacturer floor of all the standing water," he said.
"On scene were three Engines, two Ladder trucks, Rescue truck, and the Command vehicle with a total of 17 Firefighters.
