Trepanier medial marijuana grow-op gets temporary use permit

A building on Paradise Valley Drive in the Trepanier area near the Okanagan Connector is one step closer to legally producing medical marijuana.

The Regional District of the Central Okanagan gave conditional approval for a temporary use permit for the proposed facility at its board meeting Monday.

Bruce Smith, communications and intergovernmental affairs officer with the regional district, said the applicant will have to meet several conditions before the facility can begin producing medical marijuana, such as: Obtaining a licence from Health Canada, completing a wildfire risk assessment report and addressing how it will impact water in the area.

The property owner has applied for a federal licence to produce medical marijuana from a building, which is currently being retrofitted on a four-hectare parcel.

The applicant requested the temporary use permit in order to seek subdivision consolidation with two adjacent properties. That would meet the eight-hectare minimum parcel size required by the regional district for medical marijuana production.

If the properties are consolidated into one parcel, a variance must still be approved by the regional district for building setback requirements.

"If they were to get the licence and meet the other conditions, then the temporary use permit would allow them to operate the facility," said Smith.

"Whether they get the licence or not, in the end, is up to Health Canada."

Smith said this is the first medical marijuana production application to be considered by the regional board.

"We understand there are five potential licences out there that are in various stages of process," said Smith.

The regional district submitted the proposal to Peachland council for consideration earlier this month. Peachland councillors were not in favour of the temporary use permit.
