West Kelowna: Train to become a paid on call firefighter
West Kelowna Fire Rescue is now accepting applications for paid on call firefighters and will host two informational meetings for anyone interested in learning more about this opportunity.
Dates: Wednesday, Sept. 3, Thursday, Sept. 4
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Station 34, 3339 Gates Rd., West Kelowna
Application packages are available on the District’s website, www.districtofwestkelowna.ca, under Departments/Fire Rescue/Careers or can be picked up at Station 32 in Lakeview Heights at 2708 Olalla Road, West Kelowna.
The paid on call recruit training program is a 16-week process, on Tuesday evenings and every second weekend.
After the initial four months, recruit training continues on Tuesday evenings for the remainder of the first year and is designed to give the necessary skills to be a paid on call member with West Kelowna Fire Rescue.
Training topics cover Emergency Medical First Responder Level 3 with AED and Spinal Endorsements, NFPA 1001, S100/S130 Wildland Firefighter and Live Fire.
Recruits are required to attend 75 per cent of weekly Tuesday night training, and complete the 12-month probationary firefighter training period.
After successful completion of the training and testing, paid on call firefighters are assigned to one of the district’s four fire stations, based on where they reside in the district.
Recruits must be 18 years of age or older and a resident of West Kelowna to qualify.
Applications will be received in person at 2708 Ollala Rd., West Kelowna until Friday, Sept. 5 and must include a completed application form, a current driver’s abstract, a current resumé, a clear criminal records check and a doctor’s consent form.
