Join Alexandre Trudeau (Justin Trudeau’s brother) March 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mary Irwin Theatre as he argues that Canada’s 150-year history “has been told through too narrow a prism.”

Trudeau believes “for too long, our national narrative has been distilled into something neat and friendly, something clean and nice, fitting the highest ideals of Western tradition. It is a story that makes our past seem comfortable and easy to deal with, and glosses over the brutality and severity that faced our forefathers.

This gross simplification does no justice to preceding generations to the strength and endurance they showed in the face of adversity and provides little wisdom or insight for new generations.”

Titled Canadian History: An Alternative Take on the Past for a New View of the Future, this Fresh Dialogues event is hosted by the Fresh Outlook Foundation in partnership with the Canada 150 and the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. Tickets are $25, and available online through Rotary Centre for the Arts.

Following Trudeau’s keynote presentation, during which he’ll describe Canada as “an unfinished country still in need of bold men and women,” local history experts Sharron Simpson, Wayne Wilson, Duane Thomson, and Ken Mather will share their thoughts about how we can apply what we’ve learned from the past to future decision-making for sustainable communities.
