West Kelowna Fire responded to a vehicle fire on Westside Road near the intersection of Nancee Way on Tuesday afternoon at 3:35 p.m.

A boat trailer had a mechanical issue causing  a wheel to fall off. The wheel ignited the dry grass alongside the roadway and the fire grew to approximately 300 square meters.

The first engine arriving, based in Lakeview Heights, made a quick attack on the head of the fire and was able to to keep it from encroaching on nearby residences.

Eventually a total of 12 West Kelowna firefighters were on-scene and were supported by West Kelowna RCMP, BC Ambulance Paramedics and BC Hydro.

The incident commander consulted with BC Wildfire Management at the Penticton Zone but provincial resources were not requested due to the quick knock-down.

West Kelowna fire crews rechecked the fire area during the night and will conduct rechecks today. The fire is 100 per cent  guarded and considered under control.

This incident serves as a reminder to the fire department and the public that, even though the fire danger rating is gradually decreasing there is still a moderate to high wildfire fire danger rating and that we all need to be cautious and vigilant.
