Kelowna RCMP warn of fraudster posing as police officer

Man claims to be raising funds to combat child Internet pornography.

Kelowna RCMP are warning the public about a fraudster who claims to be a police officer raising money to combat crime.

The man, who police say has an authoritative voice, has been calling people claiming to be a police officer who is raising funds for combating child Internet pornography.

Const. Steve Holmes say a woman fell victim to the scam back in January, giving her credit card number to the caller.

She thought nothing of the call until she recently received her credit card statement.

“Fortunately there was only a $20 charge on the account,” said Holmes.

The RCMP say they do not publicly solicit funds by telephone, mail or door to door. They ask that anyone who has been the recipient of such solicitation by someone claiming to be an officer report the incident to RCMP.
