The city has created more parking in downtown Kelowna.

More than 500 parking stalls are now available for evening, weekend and special event public parking in the new Memorial Parkade.

“Construction work is still going on in the facility, with finishing work including the building façade, landscaping and interior construction of office spaces on Ellis Street,” said Dave Duncan, parking services manager for the city. “So we ask for people’s patience as multiple construction projects on the corners of Doyle and Ellis Street near completion.”

The busy intersection is also home to the recently completed Interior Health building and the new Innovation Centre. Most of the parking stalls in the Memorial Parkade will be reserved during the day for Interior Health employees working at the new IH building located across the street.

The new parkade—part of $14.9 million project to build it and expand the nearby Library Parkade— is located between Memorial Arena and the Kelowna Museum. It was supposed to late last year but weather delayed its completion.

The city says intermittent lane closures on Ellis Street will be in effect to allow for installation of the exterior cladding as crews finish up work on the new parkade. Motorists are asked to obey traffic control personnel when the entrance or exit lane is closed and single-lane alternating traffic is in effect to enter or leave the parkade.

The Memorial Parkade parking stalls are in addition to the 197 additional stalls created in the expansion of the Library Parkade one block to the north, on the other side of the intersection.

“In the course of expanding the Library Parkade, we were also able to enhance the existing structure with fresh paint, renewed the traffic deck coating and added a vehicle counting system” said Duncan. “This new technology will benefit downtown visitors and staff by letting them see, in real-time, how many stalls are available before they even drive inside.”

Leasing opportunities are available in the Library Plaza Parkade, centrally located with high-exposure store fronts and potential patio space. Contact HM Commercial for more information on the ground level retail units ranging from 1,450 to 4,285 square feet.
