November 01, 1923 – June 23, 2010
After a lengthy illness, Janina Sokolowski passed away peacefully at Sunpoint Village. She is survived by her children: John, Michael, Helen (Joe), Christine (Roger); 9 Grandchildren: Mark(Lisa), Kristyn (Rob), Kevin (Anita), Tanja (Gary), Brett, Jaclyn, Christopher, Jeffery (Samantha), Kyle (Shelly), and 9 Great Grandchildren. Janina Kaleta was born in Rzejowice, Poland. She spent her early years in the County of Radomsko. Her younger years were spent in poverty, living under a thatched roof and a dirt floor, with three siblings and a Mum who was a peasant farmer. During WWII she was a prisoner in Oswiecim (Auschwitz) and Bergen Belsen concentration camps. She saw the worst of mankind, the horrors of war, scenes of unimaginable savagery and the worst injustice that humankind can inflict on one another. She survived these consequences of hate and brutality. Her inner strength and spirituality of love, humility and forgiveness provided the foundation for her survival and growth. After the war she married Jan Sokolowski on July 28, 1945. She and her family spent the next 5 years in refugee camps. On March 09, 1951 the family group docked in Halifax. All moved to Red Lake, Ontario where she spent the next 40 years raising her family, working at the Red Lake Hospital and creating a better life that she dreamt of. In the summer of 1992 she retired to Kelowna, where she enjoyed her flowers, her garden, her fruit trees, and the sunshine. She taught her family to love each other and not things. She was a humble person who did not believe she was smarter, stronger or better than others. She was like everyone else with her frailties and her gifts. Our family would like to thank Drs. Mackle and Carlyle for their care and support. We would, especially, like to thank all the nurses and caregivers at Sunpoint Village, in the Belgo and Ellison Communities, for their love, warmth, compassion, patience, sensitivity and care. Prayers will be held on June 29, 2010 at 8 PM and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on June 30, 2010. Both will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church, 839 Sutherland Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to a Children’s Charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250-860-7077.
