Wally “Papa”, MEHMAL

MEHMAL, Wally “Papa”, 72 of Grand Forks, BC passed away peacefully on November 7th, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at the Grand Forks Hospital. He leaves his devoted wife, Audrey of 41 years; his son Leonard (Lorraine) and their children Dylan and Cara, his daughter Jennifer (Ken) and their children Clayton and Travis, and his daughter Alisa (Jeremy). Wally is survived by his brothers Harry and John, sisters Joy, Gwen, Lisa and their families.

Wally was born on January 16th, 1937 in Grand Forks on the Mehmal Ranch, the 2nd son of George and Mary Mehmal. He was known for his charming personality and sense of humor. His passion for horses and cattle gave him the ‘cowboy spirit’ that we all knew him for. He followed his older brother into driving transport trucks at an early age but loved to rodeo at any opportunity. It was early in his 37-year career at West Kootenay Power that Wally found his true love, Audrey in 1964. His life long ranching

partnership with his brother John was a significant part of Wally’s life. He passed on his experience and

knowledge to his children and members of the local 4-H clubs. In the past 12 years, Papa’s love for his grandchildren softened the tough old cowboy and showed us a new side of Wally. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Thank you to all friends and family who have been part of Wally’s life.

The service will be held at the Gospel Chapel (7048 Donaldson Drive) in Grand Forks, BC at 1:00PM on November 14th, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grand Forks Palliative Care Unit and/or the Kelowna Hospital ward 4B for specialized equipment.
