Senior an easy catch for bylaw enforcer

To the editor:

I am the easy victim of selective and discriminatory ticketing by Kelowna’s bylaw enforcement—a convenient prey I’m an old man riding my bike along Leon Avenue without my helmet.

I’m not a drug dealer or client.

I’m pulled over. While this agent is writing me the ticket a dog is dragging a man by the leash with his other dog running free. He gets a quick verbal warning: “Hey! Keep that dog on a leash,” and is merrily on his way.

The waterfront and Bernard Avenue is abundant with cyclists every day, many racing along sidewalks clearly marked “No Cycling.” What is the fine for riding on sidewalks?

I took my camera. In one hour I counted 29 cycling without helmets, and many more as I was too slow to snap a photo. From spring until November I ride the streets in Kelowna, and for 10 years never have I seen a bylaw agent ticket anyone.

This one time only convenient setup is unjust and unfair advantage is taken by the city while closing its eyes to the waterfront and Bernard Avenue where thousand ride bareheaded every day.

You put a sting operation on a dead end street to punish a couple of old guys because it’s easy, and allow dog owners to run free. It won’t scare away tourists, and you look good.
