Kelowna ‘overcharged’ by FortisBC for electricity
To the editor:
Kelowna’s electricity customers are overcharged.
As a new resident of Kelowna, I was surprised when I received my electricity bill from Fortis.
When I compared it with what I had been paying BC Hydro when living in Peachland, I found I was paying three times the basic charge ($29.65 vs. $9.60 every two months) and a further $13 based on consumption of 1,000 kwh every two months.
This represents about $200, every year, extra being paid to Fortis.
Extrapolating this as to how much extra Fortis is charging Kelowna residents who use the same quantity of power, it can easily be seen that $8 million extra per year is being taken from 40,000 Kelowna residences.
And I think that it will be substantially more than this, because my consumption is rather low on average.
I have been assured by BC Hydro that the rates they charge residential customers anywhere that they supply in our province are identical to what I paid in Peachland.
Should Kelowna residents be subject to this or should our elected officials at Kelowna City Hall stand still for this? I suggest that they should require Fortis to be competitive and charge the same as BC Hydro.
