One-time funding and photo ops inadequate
To the editor:
After reading Steve Thomson’s MLA Report (Jan. 25 Capital News) I feel there are a few things that are begging to be addressed.
I currently work at the college for the Students’ Union and I am incredibly happy to see one-time investments; however, I would also like to see continued support for our post-secondary education system.
This idea of one-time spending is not the answer, nor is it enough to sustain a thriving college.
Here at Okanagan College, we have consistently seen budget cuts due to the government refusing to increase funding by inflation.
On the other hand, universities have seen their funding increased every year by inflation.
How can the college expect to stay competitive when it is forced to choose between turning on the lights and hiring a much-needed professor?
If Mr. Thomson’s government wants to see support this election they really need to take time out of their days and really address the current issues in the post secondary sector.
The government needs to be making post secondary education affordable and available to all instead of looking for flashy photo opportunities and one-time funding opportunities.
