Enough has not been done to keep Ballet Kelowna viable

To the editor:

As a member of the Ballet Kelowna Society, I wish to express my outrage at the statement the board of directors issued in a press release late last Friday which leaves many unanswered questions. (Ballet Kelowna Board Opts to Fold Dance Company, Feb. 5 Capital News.)

It is less than two months since the annual general meeting of the society which I attended, and there was absolutely no mention of the “imminent retirement” of the artistic director David LaHay .

Also, I would suggest that the feasibility of the society existing in a “shell form” is not sustainable, given that the word would be out in the cultural world after the failure of the society, that the interior of British Columbia cannot sustain a dance company, though it has done so with distinction for the last 10 years.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company persevered through decades to become feted today, it certainly did not succumb to what must have been very hard times in the early days.

Maybe the board should show the same spirit further west and bang the drum for more government sponsorship at least.

June M. Macleod,

Kelowna
