Letter: Westside Road is deadly

Open letter to the B.C. Minister of Highways:

My wife and I recently travelled along Kelowna’s Westside Road to Lake Okanagan Resort.

North of Trader’s Cove the road is in a condition that calls for either closure or urgent repairs. After ten kilometers of winding but well-designed highway, drivers suddenly, and without warning, find themselves on a narrow section of road that belongs to a bygone age when there were no tourists and very little traffic.

Moreover, the northbound lane has no shoulder and its edges are dangerously eroded. The slightest miscalculation will send a vehicle down the cliff side.

White warning poles are a joke.

Drivers court head-on collisions when they veer into the southbound lane.

We hear you are reluctant to commit additional funds because the road is deemed unimportant. As a consequence, Westside Road will continue to imperil life with consequences that could easily outweigh the costs of an upgrade.

Besides, the current situation is wholly unworthy of our province and leaves a bad impression with our visitors to take home.

Harry Liedtke,

West Kelowna
