Letter: Act quickly before mussels infest our lakes

Open Letter to MLA Steve Thomson, and MP Ron Cannan:

Re: Mussel Invasion of Okanagan Lakes.

I read an article in the Capital News Thursday April 3 (A Need To Fight Mussel Invasion, by Richard Rolke), of the risk of zebra and quagga mussels infestation to our lake system in the Okanagan Valley.

This is a very serious issue. If it’s not dealt with now, then it will surely cost millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money later on.

This was the same with the pine beetle infestation. Experts in the field were warning governments about this for years, until it was finally taken seriously. By then, thousands of acres were affected and cost millions of dollars more than if it was addressed quickly and timely.

Please take this risk seriously before a repetition of the pine beetle debacle happens again, but this time to our beautiful lakes.
